Damaged Aluminum Sliding Glass door rails can be quickly and inexpensively replaced by using Glass Door Replacement Rails. The aluminum rails are 15/16 inch (23.8 millimeter) wide and 5/16 inch (7.9 millimeter) tall at the top of the rail. You can install the rail with screws, rivets and/or sealants.
These replacement rails were originally designed to replace vinyl sliding glass door rails that are removable by snapping them out.
We use these replacement rails on doors that have very low and small 1/4" beads that have become so damaged that the small rail topper will not snap over due to so much damage. Your old aluminum rail bead can be shaved off using a sharp wood chisel down to a flat surface. Then you can attach the new replacement rail with "self tapping" sheet metal screws and a little silicone. We use these in worst case scenarios when the only other thing to do is replace the door.
